Success Stories from ALP Alumni
Tess has been working through Project Achieve within the city's low-income housing programs. Her heart for service was apparent from the moment she first joined ALP. Her three years in the program provided Tess with some of her very first opportunities to explore her raw talent as a caretaker. She will be going to the University of MN in Morris next year hoping to major in Sociology and Social Work.
Kathryn wants to major in Youth and Family Ministry with an emphasis on outdoor leadership when she attends Trinity Lutheran College this fall in Everett, WA. According to her mom, the confidence Kathryn required to apply for college and move to Washington came from her participation in ALP. Her passion for outdoor programming developed during her three years camping and traveling with her ALP group in the wilderness.
Dirk spent the summer life guarding for Burnsville School District. Dirk was incredibly shy when he started ALP, but over the course of his ALP career he set goals to become a better leader with a stronger voice. Dirk is currently taking a Water Safety Instructor course so that he can teach water safety classes to others. He will be attending South Dakota State University in the fall and hopes to major in Engineering.
Nils’ mom wrote, “When Nils first started ALP we fought in the car the whole way to the office. He did not want to participate. Tonight he could hardly wait to come, join in and see his friends. I believe he learned that he is capable of more than he ever thought. Because of ALP he has gone on to volunteer with Habitat – went to Guatemala. He wants to continue to be involved with WI. Being in ALP has been the best, most positive program he has participated in and followed through with.”
