What is Wilderness Inquiry?
Since 1978, Wilderness Inquiry (WI) has provided wilderness adventures to thousands of people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. WI's goal is to facilitate community integration, promote healthy lifestyles, and encourage awareness of the environment. Our inclusive outdoor leadership style promotes the ability to assess surroundings, group dynamics and goals while including all participants in the success of each expedition. For more information visit our What is WI? webpage.
What is WI's Inclusive Outdoor Leadership Style?
Inclusive Outdoor Leadership is the ability to assess surroundings, group dynamics and goals to seamlessly include all members into the success of the expedition. This approach welcomes and empowers participants of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
Where does ALP go on trips?
Wilderness Inquiry travels to over 50 different destinations all over the globe. Over the past 30 years we have found some of the best high adventure destinations to take youth. Each year a few new trips are added to the list. A few of the destinations include the Superior Hiking Trail, Mississippi River, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Montana's Missouri River and the Grass River in Manitoba.
Who can go on an ALP trip?
Youth ages 12 to 19 are eligible. Youth of all ability levels and backgrounds, including those with disabilities, are welcome to participate in ALP. Call us if you have any questions about whether ALP is right for you.
How much does an ALP trip cost?
Each trip has a fee that covers all gear, food on trail, staff, and group camping equipment. On some trips, there is an additional fee for transportation to the trip put-in place.
Many of our ALP trip destinations mirror regular WI trip experiences for adults, except they are usually less expensive. This is because WI raises money from generous donors to help keep its youth programs financially accessible to every one.
Are scholarships available?
Yes, scholarships are available to those who qualify. Payment plans are also available. For more information, visit the scholarship page. Also check with your school, church, or cultural organization about available help with funding. We have put together a list of outside scholarships available for other organizations. Girls can check out the Mini Grant Program through the Ann Bancroft Foundation.
